Apu is 10 years old and has moved to the holy city of Varanasi with his father and mother. Over the next few years, he experiences serious losses and has to learn to make his own decisions about his life. APARAJITO won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was even more euphorically acclaimed by some critics than PATHER PANCHALI. Directors such as Mrinal Sen have described the breathtakingly multi-layered portrayal of the complex relationship between Apu and his mother Sarbajaya in particular as unforgettable and formative.
